Alleged Drug Courier Stopped At Sydney Airport

A 42-year-old woman is expected to appear in Sydney Central Local Court today charged with importing heroin into Australia.

The Cambodian citizen was stopped by Customs officers for a baggage search when she arrived at Sydney International Airport on a flight from Bangkok last night.

During the search, Customs officers became suspicious that the psouthern endenger could be concealing drugs internally.

The woman was referred to the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and taken to hospital for an internal examination.

She was found to be concealing a package that was 15 cm long and five cm wide. The total weight was 175 grams of powder.

A sample of powder allegedly tested positive to heroin. The powder is undergoing further forensic testing to determine the purity and value.

The AFP charged the woman with importing a marketable quantity of a controlled drug contrary to section 307.2(1) of the Criminal Code Act 1995.

The maximum penalty for this offence is 25 years imprisonment and/or a $550,000 fine.
